By the time one LFTR is up and running, nano-solar will be very close to being cheaper than oil and nuclear …and well on its way to being cheaper than coal.

The coming nano energy revolution is going to make nuclear look like yesterday’s news

thorium requires uranium or plutonium to trigger off the fissioning. thorium salts are very corrosive and that’s why thorium reactors start and then shut down after a few years because of leaky pipes .U.S. went through this and so did India which has a plant Kakrapar1 which was shut down twice and now they are pumping mega bucks into it to get it restarted in 2015…..what a waste of cash.
China will learn the hard way.Govts get big kickbacks from big plants and don’t care about people

@CooldudeXXL the sun will implode too, it just a matter of time… there is no absolute in this world. I rather we take a chance to develop technology that can get us off this rock then to sit here and wait for our doom.

we are anonymous, we are aware of the corruption in the world’s governments and their apathy for the human lives because of money.

we are aware of the governments’ attempt to cover on the news of the rebellions to keep us as slaves for the current system.

we are anonymous, we declare war on the corrupted system, join the plan to get your freedom and rights back. you are a human being, your life has value. we are anonymous, we? are legion, expect us!

    @cynicalmindy,
Have you ever considered that maybe the technology to effectively use thorium has not been perfected yet, hence it’s not widely used?

wouldnt you think that if thorium gave more power and was safer we would be using it already?

Any man-made nuclear reactor can and will breach containment. It’s just a matter of time.

China is betting MORE on solar – in May, China doubled it’s goal for solar to 50 GW by 2020 (WAY more power than they’ll get from nuclear) and FROZE all new nuclear plans

Solar will be cheaper than coal in ten years

    Nuclear is over

But where will the U.S. military have the waste to use Depleted Uranium against our enemies?! Absurd to use Thorium!

    Haha

@locolalo1364 Calling LFTR wastes “dirty” is pretty funny considering 85% of those wastes are either useful medical isotopes or extremely chemically attractive elements like palladium and rhodium. The remaining 15% stay hot for 300 years. In addition, LFTR fuel burn rate is almost 100%, so you’ll be producing 1/200th of the waste produced by a typical LWR and get the same amount of energy. Fusion is not cheaper than coal, while LFTRs are by orders of magnitude, so why aren’t we funding LFTRs?

@freeyourmind4evr In addition if you’re so worried about airborn radionuclides or toxic metals then please consider that a liquid fluoride thorium reactor would never EVER spray radioactive material into the air, unless you can find the thousands of degrees of temperature needed to vaporize fluoride salts, while coal plants release thousands of tonnes of deadly uranium and toxic thorium particulates into the air every year.

@freeyourmind4evr Thorium sounds worse to you based on a very flimsy description of potential health hazard? I can think of far worse chemicals than Thorium to ingest or inhale. And making thorium out to be a radioactive bogeyman isn’t feasible either. Th-232′s half life is some tens of billions of years making it incredibly docile in terms of radiation, to the point that it blends with background radiation. Toxicity-wise, most metals are toxic, and we still work with them, so what’s your point?

@freeyourmind4evr (continued) so far and is world’s largest investor in new alternative energy technology today, be it solar, wind, water, fuel cell, Li-battery, electric cars, (safe) nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.

@freeyourmind4evr (continued) toxicity primarily. A catastrophic nuclear meltdown cannot happen in such a power plant due to a negative feedback process in the system.

“…keeps their people in subjucation and imports the most poisonous products…” Again, that’s not an argument, but an insult and a bias, which has nothing to do with this technology in particular. Unlike Japan (Fukushima), Ukraine (Tschernobyl) and USA (Three-Mile-Island), China hasn’t had any nuclear desaster
